School’s Back in Session: What Professional Drivers Need to Know
As summer winds down and the school year gears up, roads across the country start looking a lot different. From busy school zones to stop-and-go neighborhoods filled with backpacks and buses, back-to-school season brings a unique set of hazards for truck drivers.
We know our drivers are always focused on safety—and with schools back in session, it’s more important than ever to stay alert and patient. Whether you’re rolling through suburban neighborhoods or city streets, here’s what to look out for and how to navigate the season safely.
School Buses: Stop Means Stop
Few things are more dangerous—or more serious—than ignoring school bus laws. In all 50 states, drivers must stop when a school bus extends its stop sign and activates its flashing red lights, unless the road has a physical median dividing traffic.
Quick refresher for Marten drivers:
- Always stop if you’re behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direction on a two-lane road.
- Remain stopped until the stop sign is retracted and the lights are off—even if it seems like the coast is clear.
- Be extra careful on rural or less-traveled routes, where kids may be crossing in unexpected places.
Pro Tip: School bus cameras are increasingly common, and violations can lead to serious fines—or worse.
Slow Down in School Zones
It’s easy to miss a sign when you’re trying to stay on schedule, but school zones require reduced speed and full attention.
Watch for:
- Flashing lights and reduced speed limits—often as low as 15–25 mph.
- Crossing guards or patrols, especially before 9 AM and after 3 PM.
- Kids on foot, bikes, or scooters who may not be looking before they cross.
If your route takes you through areas like midwestern towns or southern suburbs , plan extra time into your day to account for these slower-speed stretches.
Kids Are Predictably Unpredictable
Unlike adult pedestrians, kids often:
- Dart out from between parked cars
- Cross the street without looking
- Drop something and turn back suddenly
Your best bet? Expect the unexpected. Minimize cab distractions and scan driveways, sidewalks, and crosswalks as you drive through residential areas and towns.
Plan for Delays—and Be Patient
Back-to-school means longer morning commutes, slower neighborhood traffic, and more sudden stops during afternoon runs. That can feel frustrating when you're trying to hit your delivery window—but remember: a few extra minutes of patience can prevent a tragedy.
At Marten, we believe your professionalism is what sets you apart—and staying calm, cool, and courteous during high-traffic school times reflects that professionalism to everyone on the road.
Marten Drivers Make a Difference
Every time you brake for a bus, ease off the throttle in a school zone, or keep a watchful eye for kids on the move, you’re doing more than driving safely—you’re protecting someone’s family.
Marten is proud to have a team of drivers who take that responsibility seriously. We see the way you show up, mile after mile—not just for your loads, but for the people in your communities.
As the school year ramps up, let’s all stay extra alert, patient, and, as always, safe.
