Brake Safety Week Highlights and What They Mean for You

Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) shines a spotlight on one of the most critical components of every truck: the braking system. From August 24–30, 2025, certified inspectors across North America carried out brake-focused inspections during Brake Safety Week.

This year’s emphasis was on brake drums and rotors, two parts of the system that play a major role in stopping power and overall safety. Inspectors also looked at overall braking performance, recording data that will be released later this year.

Why Brake Safety Matters

Brake systems are a leading cause of out-of-service violations during roadside inspections. When components like drums or rotors fail, they not only reduce braking efficiency but can also send debris into traffic, creating serious hazards. That’s why the CVSA uses Brake Safety Week to educate drivers, mechanics, and carriers on the importance of routine inspections and preventative maintenance.

For example, in 2024, inspectors conducted 16,725 inspections during Brake Safety Week. The good news? About 87% of trucks passed with no out-of-service violations. The other 13% were pulled off the road until repairs could be made, showing just how important consistent brake checks are for avoiding downtime and protecting everyone on the road.

Brake Safety at Marten

Our drivers are trained and supported to put safety first on every haul, and our equipment is maintained with the highest standards in mind. Brake checks are part of that commitment, whether it’s during pre-trip inspections, at a terminal, or with our maintenance teams on the road.

A Year-Round Responsibility

Brake Safety Week may only last seven days, but its message is clear: safety never takes a week off. Drivers who stay proactive with inspections can avoid costly breakdowns, prevent accidents, and keep freight moving safely.

As we await the official 2025 results, one thing is certain: brake safety is everyone’s responsibility every single week. At Marten, we’re proud to support our drivers and their dedication to keeping America’s roads safe.
